Arlington Forest UMC responds to the crisis in Haiti
The earthquake in
Haiti on January 12th has devastated the island, killing tens of
thousands. UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), the Methodist
Church of Haiti and Arlington Forest UMC have responded swiftly to aid
in the recovery of the destroyed Caribbean nation. UMCOR asked the
Districts to assemble health kits, and our congregations worked hard to
collect and assemble 377 kits and contribute $825 in cash which was
sent to the UMCOR Haitian Relief Effort. The Arlington/Alexandria
District sent a total of 9, 205 kits. Thanks to both Chesterbrook Montessori School and our Boy Scout Troup 648 for assembling kits on very short notice, and thank you to everyone who has helped and continues to help Haiti.
A new law allows contributors to Haiti relief efforts to claim their cash donations on their 2009 tax returns, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The law, enacted January 22, refers to donations for Haiti relief made to charitable organizations such as UMCOR after January 11 to March 1, 2010. Taxpayers may make their deduction on either their 2009 or 2010 returns.
